Dance Program

performance space and rehearsal studios

The Dance Program at Hunter College occupies 13,400 square feet of the sixth and seventh floors of Thomas Hunter Hall. Hunter College originally used these top floors as gymnasium space but since the 1970’s it has housed the Dance Program.

The renovation is a juxtaposition of old and new, historic and modern. State-ofthe- art dance facilities embrace the existing soaring neo-Gothic windows. Current building systems for heating and cooling are to be modernized, and unused shaft spaces are to be reclaimed. The larger of the two existing double-height rehearsal spaces becomes a flexible performance space with motorized telescopic seating for 100 spectators, appropriate means of egress, professional-level sound and lighting systems, and a control room.
