Black Box Incubator
The Black Box Mediaspace and Auditorium will be a multi-funtional state-of-the art digital media resource, performance and instructional space For Hunter College.
Rooms 543 and 510a are located adjacent to each other on the 5th floor of the North Building at Hunter College. The rooms were originally designed as gymnasium space with double-height ceilings. In subsequent years, the College subdivided this space into two separate facilities.
In their existing configuration, room 543 (the “black box”) is set up as an informal rehearsal studio, teaching exhibition and event space. The black box is used by the several departments - primarily the department of film and media. Although there is additional work to be done, ongoing improvements to the electrical and mechanical systems serving this space – as well as repairs to roof leaks - have helped make this space occupiable.
The adjacent room 510a (the “auditorium”) is a large raked classroom seating 191 students. Finishes, seating and technology in this room are original to its 1980’s conversion and are in need of modernization.
Combined, the two rooms feature 26’-0” tall ceilings with two walls of windows and total approximately 4,600sf. Adjacent support spaces bring the total square footage of this suite of spaces to approximately 6,600sf.
